Master’s Programs

University of Wisconsin-Madison Economics is currently ranked as one of the top economics departments in the United States, and we consistently strive for innovation and improvement. We offer three distinct master’s programs, each designed to offer students the quantitative and analytical skills they need in preparation for doctoral programs and careers in economics, finance, and related fields.

Master of Science in Economics

The Master of Science in Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison places a stronger emphasis on econometrics than similar programs at other universities. The result is in-demand graduates who receive PhD admissions from top universities.

Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (MSQE)

The STEM-designated MSQE program at UW–Madison blends economic theory with cutting-edge quantitative methods to prepare students for high-impact careers in data science, finance, policy analysis, and beyond. Designed
for ambitious professionals and recent graduates, our program offers a fast-paced curriculum, expert faculty, and strong industry connections.

  • Career-focused. Well suited for students wanting to prepare for a
    career where advanced economics training is required or beneficial, but a PhD is not required. The program provides a dedicated career and placement advisor.

Master of Science in Financial Economics (MSFE)

The MSFE program emphasizes modern quantitative methods in financial economics and econometrics. Students are taught the theories that guide financial practices and the highly sought after analytical skills necessary to perform advanced financial analyses.

UW-Madison’s rich tradition in economics and econometrics (top 10 US News and World Report ranking) and finance puts it in a unique position to provide the rigorous training offered by this program.

The Master of Science in Financial Economics is a designated STEM degree program that will provide the theoretical knowledge, analytical skills and real-world experience to launch a successful career. As a joint program between the Wisconsin School of Business’ Finance Department and the Department of Economics, students have access to faculty and services in both areas — including access to the first-rate Finance Analytics Lab with specialized Bloomberg terminals.
