Master’s Program
The Wisconsin Economics master’s program offers a terminal graduate degree that prepares students for high-level professional careers in government and industry or further study for the Ph.D. degree.
Our master’s program is well suited for:
- students who want to prepare for a career where advanced economics training is required or beneficial but the Ph.D. is not required, or
- students with little prior formal training in economics who want to prepare for admission to a Ph.D. program in economics or a related field, or
- students whose undergraduate training in economics is from an institution that is not well known by U.S. employers or Ph.D. programs at U.S. universities.

Master’s in Quantitative Economics (MSQE) Program
The MSQE program is a terminal graduate degree that prepares students for high-level professional careers involving the analysis of economic data.
This master’s program is well suited for students who want to prepare for a career where advanced economics training is required or beneficial but the Ph.D. is not required.
The MSQE program emphasizes econometric training more than similar programs at other universities. Today’s job market requires strong quantitative skills along with a command of economic theory. Wisconsin’s tradition of supporting economic theory with quantitative methods is well suited to these requirements.

Master of Science in Financial Economics (MSFE)
The MSFE program emphasizes modern quantitative methods in financial economics and econometrics. Students are taught the theories that guide financial practices and the highly sought after analytical skills necessary to perform advanced financial analyses.
UW-Madison’s rich tradition in economics and econometrics (top 10 US News and World Report ranking) and finance puts it in a unique position to provide the rigorous training offered by this program.
The Master of Science in Financial Economics is a designated STEM degree program that will provide the theoretical knowledge, analytical skills and real-world experience to launch a successful career. As a joint program between the Wisconsin School of Business’ Finance Department and the Department of Economics, students have access to faculty and services in both areas — including access to the first-rate Finance Analytics Lab with specialized Bloomberg terminals.
