Declaring Economics as Your Major

To declare a major in economics at the UW-Madison:

1. Meet the following requirements before declaring the major:

  • Complete at least two economics courses on the UW-Madison campus.
  • Complete a calculus course.
  • Earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all completed economics and calculus courses.
During the Summer:
We are not accepting new majors until August. You must meet with an economics advisor to declare, and in the month of August we have three group advising sessions set up for this purpose. You must sign up in advance, which you can do here. Group advising sessions last about 30 minutes and meet in the Economics Undergraduate Suite, Room 7238 Sewell Social Science.

During the Fall/Spring Semesters:
2. After meeting the above requirements, complete the Declaration Form for the economics major. The form is available at the Economics Undergraduate Office in Room 7238 Sewell Social Sciences.

3. Students are required to meet with an economics academic advisor before the form will be signed. Students are able to meet with our advisors during drop-in advising, Tuesday-Friday, 10am-12pm.

(a) For students in the College of Letters and Science, the Declaration Form will be processed in the Economics Undergraduate Office.
(b) For students in other schools or colleges, the Declaration Form will be returned to you. You are responsible for submitting the completed form to the administrative office of your school/college.
